“We deserve a solid 8, because there’s been great enthusiasm from the first day of pre-season onwards and we’ve been able to get off on the right foot.” Marco Storari provided his verdict on Juve’s start to the season in an exclusive interview with Juventus Channel’s Filo Diretto. The goalkeeper’s mark seems a reasonable assessment, given the fact that the Bianconeri are currently flying high at the top of the league. But the shot-stopper insists the team won’t be distracted by their lofty position: “It would be impossible under a manager like Conte,” said Storari. “He reminds us every day about results from previous campaigns and constantly repeats to us that we can’t afford to let our guard down, and that we must continue to battle. The praise we’ve received, however, is nice and allows us to get on with our work aware that we’re doing a good job.”
And the hard work continues, with a tough away clash in Naples just around the corner: “To tell the truth, we’ve faced many difficult games and, as we did last Saturday, we’ve often won them. Napoli are definitely a very strong team, among the most organised outfits in the league. They’ve a combative squad like ours, they’ll run a lot and I believe we’ll see a good game.”
Storari, however, refused to deem the game as a meeting of two title contenders, “…because using that word already at this point, given the results from previous years, would seem a bit excessive to me. We can achieve important results, but we need to continue to win in order to do so.”
Since arriving in Turin, Storari has proved to be a more than capable understudy for Gigi Buffon. His consistent displays have seen the club recently extend his contract until 2014: “I’ve played two games and I’m happy, because finding a place in a team like this isn’t simple. Conte was immediately straightforward with me, he said that my role would be as Buffon’s deputy, but he wanted me to stay because he considered me to be important. After all, as a 34-year-old, I’m no longer a youngster and I’m at one of the best clubs in the world. To have opted for a different experience wouldn’t have made sense and I’m happy that I’ve stayed.”
